Photographs fron the 1977 British Speleological Expedition to the Zagros Mts, Iran. - Back to index - foward to next image
Bob Lewis - I recently found out he had died in Bristol - in far from ideal circumstances. He was the Expedition leader - and a great British eccentric. Soon after we arrived at the mountain he set off on his own - ' on a reckie', with very little water and minimal supplies. Having nearly died after collapsing from heat exhaustion in a rock shelter, he staggered down to the river past Palangan - where he spent the night sleeping on a rock on the middle of the river because he was worried about leopards.

He was returned to us about two days later by armed Iranian Army guards - apparently found with his American Air Force aerial maps of the area in his pocket - all marked with felt pen for important areas, plus a packet of biscuits. We laughed about it at the time - but I really cannot think of anything worse to be found carrying high up on the Iran / Iraq border than US satelite maps. ( I'm not too sure how we got them ! ) - A sad loss to all.
